ON a recent weeknight, Flynn Michael walked through his Jedi academy, a dimly lighted room not in some galaxy far, far away, but rather in a rehearsal space overlooking a death star of traffic on Eighth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan.

“What time is it?” Flynn yelled to the paired-off warriors wielding illuminated swords.

“Now!” responded these aspiring Jedi knights with nary a break in their battles.

“See?” Flynn said. “They’re in the moment.”

Spinning and the Toss

Published on April 25th, 2013

If you think you know your saber, think again! Flynn steps up and talks about the balance and extravagant movements you can get from your saber when you really understand planes of motion, gyroscopics, and trusting yourself. This will be a great class for getting a real feel for how your saber moves.
* Basic Physics, Balance, listening to the Saber’s knowledge of it’s self.
* Simple vs Elaborate motion, Pendulums
* Understanding planes of motion, moving from one to the next
* Loosing the Fear, Letting go, and being the saber.
* Working/Adding these moves into your choreo

The Saber has long been the symbol of a warrior’s spirit. You should know your dance partner very intimately, and understand how they will move and react upon varied interactions with your environment. These motions are about adding sweeping movements and beautiful displays of light for the benefit of your audience. Adding flare to your scene will make the story more memorable to your audience.

Just as a precautionary note, please come with the mind set that you will drop your saber. Multiple times. I say that so that you are aware that it is not a matter of if, but of when. I advise you all to not bring any high end belt candy or anything you are afraid to scuff, crack, rattle, or worse.

“The New York Jedi, a 200-member strong band of light-saber fighting enthusiasts, will be performing at Times Square’s Ripley’s Believe It Or Not from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The group’s founder, a Brooklyn-based AV installation designer named Flynn, says there’s never been a better time to be a fan of all things “Star Wars.”

“Our class has been a litmus test,” says New York Jedi founder Flynn, 42. “Things were dying down last year to the point where I was thinking of discontinuing the classes, and then all of a sudden the announcement hit that Disney was making more ‘Star Wars’ movies. And people started coming to the classes again.”

1010WINS ‘May The Fourth Be With You’ in Times Square

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork – Audio)  — “Star Wars” fans gathered in the Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Times Square Odditorium Saturday, to celebrate what has been deemed the “holiest’ day on the “Star Wars” calendar.

As 1010 WINS’ Gary Baumgarten reported, the celebrants were marking May 4 – a day that appears to have been chosen based on a pun – “May the fourth be with you.”

But Flynn, the King Jedi in New York City, said participants take their devotion to “Star Wars” seriously.

“We have classes once a week. We train every week. We go to conventions. We make our own characters. We dress up – some of us are good guys, some of us are bad guys,” he said.

The New York Jedi masters held 30-minute “Jedi-in-training” classes Saturday to showcase light saber techniques. The community has trained for their craft using practical stage combat techniques.

Stolen Lightsaber Returned!

Published on May 22nd, 2013

BrooklynPaper-Stolen-dtg_jedimaster_2012_02_10_bk01_zLast year a very interesting story occurred, the founder of New York Jedi’s light saber was stolen. No really.

(Flynn recounts…) Well, the $400 saber was stolen from our neighborhood bar Project Parlor in September of 2011 while I was hanging with friends after one of our classes.  In what I thought was a vain effort, I had put up fliers around the neighborhood declaring it missing. “Have you seen my lightsaber?” Yes, it was funny, I admit. But the best thing happened, the Brooklyn Paper did this cool piece on me looking for it:

http://www.brooklynpaper.com/stories/35/6/dtg_jedimaster_2012_02_10_bk.html

The SpotMy students were so upset for me that they all pitched in and bought/made me a new one, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHDGbiNrFaE

….and then, more than a year and half later from the theft, I get this email on Monday, 5/20 at 4pm:

Dear New York Jedi,

You may find your lost light saber, but act quickly.  You can find it in Fort Greene Park, at the Willoughby entrance.  It is against the wall, underneath the bushes, approximately five feet in from the stairs.  It’s wrapped like a candy cane.

Yours Truly, SithBandit.

Needless to say, I was completely flabbergasted! Did someone actually respond to my effort to get The Prayer Wheel back? Regardless, I hoped on my scooter and sped as fast as I could to verify whether this message was true or not.

Thanks to The Brooklyn Paper, someone returned the stolen saber!

Thanks to The Brooklyn Paper, someone returned the stolen saber!

Sure enough, by 4:20pm I found it and had it in my hand.  In the story I’m quoted saying “when it disappeared, I told the universe, ‘If I’m supposed to get it back, please bring it back to me,’ ” he said.  And now the universe has.’

Just when you feel like the world has little or no chivalry or honesty left in it, someone does something you don’t expect, and renews your faith in human kindness.

When I got home I introduced the twins to each other. :)  I call this design the Prayer Wheel because it was inspired by Tibetan Prayer Wheels. I’m also a practicing Buddhist, so in essence, I’m praying when I spin my saber. How cool is that?!

I immediately called the paper to thank them, and they did a followup story today! Here’s the new Article today from The Brooklyn Paper:, THANKS KATE AND DANIELLE!

SPECIAL NOTE: You never know where bad things may take you.  This theft ended up leading to these interviews with The NY Times, and London Times UK, and more!

YAHOO NEWS! MASTER THE LIGHTSABER W NY JEDI!

Yahoo News, June 7th, 2013

New Yorkers, you can now learn how to wield a lightsaber just like Luke Skywalker (or Darth Vader, if you’ve gone over to the dark side). The New York Jedi (NYJ), started in 2005, are “a community of cosplayers, martial artists, and teachers who share practical stage combat techniques oriented toward lightsabers in order to create illuminated stage combat.”

Group Beginnings

Flynn Michael is the founder and Jedi grandmaster of the New York City-based group. In an interview with The New York Times, Flynn described himself as a “sci-fi, heavy-metal, over-the-top geek” who came up with the idea for the group during the 2005 Greenwich Village Halloween Parade, where he and some friends did a lightsaber routine that got a great reaction. However, he’s had a love of and fascination with “Star Wars” since its release in 1977. He explained to the Times, “I realized that George Lucas made the ideal archetype from all the best disciplines we have. I was beat up a lot as a kid, and the lightsaber brings out that strong hero inside of you, so you can stand up for yourself.”

YahooNewsPic1Inspiration via Lightsaber

Although NYJ is considered a social club, they’re much more than that. “It’s also empowering as a female, a fairly petite one at that — I’m 5’0” — to hold my own in a fight on stage in a role that has absolutely nothing to do with finding or keeping a boyfriend,” said member Melissa Koval. “Instead, it’s about pursuing my character’s own agenda in a genre that is often so male-driven and male-focused. I hope in some way I can be a role model to other women and girls who see me perform.”

In addition to activities with the group, members also create their own heroes, dress up, get to know like-minded people, and engage in combat with lightsabers. New York Jedi member Joaquin Quintana explained, “The most appealing aspects of New York Jedi are the creativity, camaraderie, and combat, as well as the creation of characters.” Members also do a variety of appearances, including those at conventions and private events.

Princess Leia-Approved

They’ve received quite a bit of notoriety and attention over the years. In 2005 at Big Apple Comic Con, NYJ reportedly sold their first lightsaber to Carrie Fisher, who played Princess Leia in the original “Star Wars” trilogy. Fisher, in turn, gave it to Yoko Ono. Not bad for NYJ’s very first convention.

Become a Jedi Member

So how can you join NYJ? Become a part of the online forum by signing up at SaberWars.com. Quite a few members stay a part of the group for years and make plenty of memories and friends along the way. “I’m about to pass my three-year mark of swinging around glorified glow sticks. I’m sporting several injuries sustained during performances, and I couldn’t be happier. I met my lovely companion, Melissa, thanks to these guys, and will be forever grateful,” said Russ Briggeman Jr.

In case you’re not familiar with how to wield a lightsaber, the New York Jedi offer a lightsaber stage combat class. Everybody is welcome. Member Jason Hoffman said, “We have people who are actors, martial artists, DJs, as well as people who are good at public relations and administration. There’s a place for everyone, and it’s only a coincidence that we all share nerdy and geeky interests.”

Jedi Meditation Mechanics with Master Flynn, 7-8pm Wednesday June 26th. (Please note that doors open at 6:30, and we will promptly begin at 7pm.) – $25

This Wednesday evening, come center yourself in the mind of the Galaxy, understand the force behind all nature, reality, and consciousness with New York Jedi’s own resident Buddhist Monk, Master Flynn.

“With our Minds we make the world.”   Come enjoy an evening of exploring meditation thru the perception of what some Science Fiction stories refer to as “The Force”, what ancient texts call The Void, and what humans feel and respond to as psychic experiences & phenomena, all in a meditation class setting. We will review the chakra system, movement and control of Pranic or Kundalini life force energy, scientific physiology as it relates to spiritual systems in the body, and outside of it, and more.  Comparisons to popular films and TV shows will be used as references to current day examples that reference these ancient teachings of a more civilized age.

If you’re a dork, geek, or other sci-fi minded type, this is the meditation class for you. You could call it an alternative approach to Enlightenment from a whole new point of view.
